International Women’s Day 2023

From production, on-set services, and art direction, these women are producing some of the most groundbreaking projects in virtual production, immersive, and real-time technology today. Hear their stories and find out what inspires their work and the women that have influenced their careers.

Monica Garcia-Torija, DMP and Real-Time Artist

What is your name, position, and amount of time you’ve been working at Dimension Studio?
My name is Monica Garcia-Torija, DMP and Real-Time Artist working for Dimension Studio and DNEG Virtual Production for six months.

What made you want to work in VFX and virtual production?
Since I was very young I wanted to be part of the film industry - films that are not based just on real life, to bring dreams, fantasy and a world of imagination and fun that would bring people smiles.

But I had no idea how to achieve that. All my family are doctors and they didn't know how to guide me in that direction.

After seven years working to be part of those talented teams within the VFX film industry, virtual production with Unreal Engine became something that pushed the boundaries of green screens in VFX; Dimension made the dreams I had as a kid come true by making me part of DNEG VP and all these amazing productions.

Who are some women in the industry you look up to?
I don't look at one person in particular, as in my field it's all about teamwork. I look at the great achievements within the film industry or VFX in general to learn from everyone.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment at Dimension?
Working for DNEG Virtual Production, I don't think I can choose one in particular at the moment. All the projects I've worked on have been beautiful (visually speaking) and I've really enjoyed being part of all of them. Being part of the artistic and technical team and having to solve any problems that came up. Ellie Goulding's "Like a Saviour" music video was my first project on set. I was the creative artist behind the scenes in Unreal.

Is there another woman at Dimension you’d like to take this time to commemorate?
I would like to pay tribute to all of them. Everyone I've met so far is amazing and it's amazing how far we've come and to be recognised in the same way, because talent doesn't depend on a genre.

Sophia Hodgson, Production Coordinator

What is your name, position, and amount of time you’ve been working at Dimension Studio?
I’m Sophia Hodgson, Production Coordinator at Dimension and I’ve been working here for just under a year now.

What made you want to work in VFX/Virtual Production/Entertainment?
I always knew I wanted to work in the Arts, having been drawn to creative industries growing up. I started working freelance for production in TV and events, and then stumbled across the world of Virtual Production, something completely different to anything I had encountered before. I think it is cool how technology is changing the industry and the traditional limitations of what you can do/see are now out of the window.

Who are some women in the industry you look up to?
Shonda Rhimes. No explanation required.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment at Dimension?
My promotion in December after six months of employment was a great highlight for me personally.

My favourite project I've worked on so far has been the virtual human and virtual world work in NARS and an upcoming series, currently in-production. Both have been great fun with strong on-set teams.

Is there another woman at Dimension you’d like to take this time to commemorate?
Kim Curtin and Sarah Pearn for guiding me professionally in my own career development, whilst being strong, charismatic people and great at leading by example.
