Virtual Humans

National Theatre: Museum of Austerity

First launched at the BFI London Film Festival (LFF), Museum of Austerity is a heart-rending mixed reality installation from theatre/XR director Sacha Wares. The experience uses volumetric capture to preserve personal stories from the austerity era.

Through the HoloLens 2 headset, viewers were able to interact with holograms depicting the victims at various points across the room. Approaching the holograms activated an audio experience, featuring family members recounting personal stories.

Museum of Austerity is more than an exhibition; it’s a blend of theatre, history and humanity. A place to reflect on the past and confront the future.

It was a finalist in the XR History Awards, nominated for Best Digital Innovation at the UK Theatre Awards and won International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) Best Immersive Production
